From idea to finished Allpresan product - how do we develop our products?

As with all pioneering projects, every new Allpresan product begins with an idea. There are many different reasons for developing a product:

the idea sometimes comes from one of our employees, and sometimes from a client. But in other cases, the legal requirements change. In these cases we rework the product to ensure that our formulations are in line with the latest specifications and are always safe for our users.

The product idea takes shape

When the teams agree that a product should be implemented, development begins and the idea comes to life. For the first time, a concrete product is created in the laboratory – initially in the form of samples.

If the response to these product samples is favourable, and if they fulfil initial requirements, the next step is to subject them to a strict examination. These tests take a close look at various parameters such as appearance, smell and pH value of the formulation. In the case of our foam creams, the questions include:

  • Is the foam stable?
  • What is the colour of the foam cream?
  • Does the smell or fragrance match the intentions of the development team? Is the pH value correct for maintaining and restoring the skin’s natural pH?

The storage life and stability of the product are also checked. And the microbiological stability of the cosmetic agent is examined in a preservative stress test.

Put to the test

The standard tests are followed by an epicutane test – a skin test – to check product tolerance. Skin tolerance is checked by applying the new product to an area of skin and covering it completely with a plaster (occlusive). The patch of skin is checked three times, 24 hours apart: If no skin reactions appear, such as redness, then it passes the test!

Comprehensive documentation

Finally, the product needs to be precisely checked in a safety assessment. This is an important part of the product safety report.

The file contains all important information on the products and it enables us – as the party responsible for the product – to ensure that the cosmetic agent is safe for human health if used correctly. In the final stage, the new product is released for delivery to our customers and expert stockists!

This process can take several months or even years because product development is such an extensive process, involving many different people and departments, and because we are so concerned about providing safety and tolerance. After all, quality takes time.
